From a young age, Lawrence A. Gabriel knew his life’s calling was to serve families during their most difficult times. By the age of ten, he had already identified his passion and declared to family and friends that he was destined to become a funeral director.

After graduating high school, Lawrence pursued that calling at McAllister School of Embalming in New York City. In 1954, he became a licensed funeral director in both Pennsylvania and New York.

In the early 1960s, Lawrence opened his first funeral home in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; the hometown of his wife, Yolanda. Around that time, he was awarded a contract with Valley Forge Veterans Hospital, where he was entrusted with the embalming and initial preparation of deceased veterans. Mr. Gabriel personally arranged for each veteran to return home with dignity and honor for final disposition.

In 1968, following the passing of local funeral director Jacob B. Graziano, Mr. Gabriel had the opportunity to return to his roots. He purchased the Graziano Funeral Home, located at 2 Hospital Street in Carbondale, his hometown, and moved back with his wife and four children: Lawrence Jr., Ramona, Francine, and Gary. That same year, the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home was established as the proud successor to the Graziano Funeral Home.

In addition to funeral services, Mr. Gabriel also provided ambulance services to the local community until such services were no longer needed from funeral homes.

From 1968 through the early 1980s, the funeral home steadily grew. At a time when many families chose funeral providers based on shared ethnic heritage, Mr. Gabriel recognized the importance of diversity and inclusivity. His commitment to serving all members of the community with compassion and dignity helped expand the funeral home’s reach and reputation.

In 1980, Mr. Gabriel further expanded the business by acquiring the George A. Collins Funeral Home (formerly the McHale Funeral Home) at 74 North Main Street in Carbondale.

Over the decades, the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home became a cornerstone of the community, earning a reputation as one of the region’s most respected funeral service providers. Mr. Gabriel’s unwavering commitment to excellence became the foundation upon which the business was built.

Tragically, Lawrence A. Gabriel Sr. passed away on September 27, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. His legacy, however, lives on.

Following his passing, his son, Lawrence A. Gabriel Jr., assumed leadership of the funeral home and continues to uphold the high standards his father set. In 2014, the business was renamed Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., reflecting its continued growth and expanded services.

Though Lawrence A. Gabriel Sr. is no longer with us, his legacy endures in the compassionate care, professionalism, and excellence that his son and dedicated staff continue to provide each and every day.
