William M. Skubic, 99, Carbondale, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. His wife was the late Theresa Colissimo.
Born in Browndale, son of the late Joseph and Mary Rozina Skubic, he was a painter and worked as a machine shop operator. William enjoyed working on his beautiful yard and garden. He was a WWII Army veteran and was one of the last true gentleman of his generation.
He left home December 7, 1942 for training and was assigned to the 301st Field Artillery “C” Battery. Camp Phillips Nebraska, and it’s cold weather, became home for a short while including his first Christmas away from home. The 13 weeks were loaded with experiences to prepare for what was to come. Departed Kansas on Sept. 1, 1943 for 10 weeks of maneuvers in Tennessee. Thanksgiving 1943 began a two day convoy to Fort McClain, Miss., where Christmas No. 2 was celebrated. Final training and test occurred before all were put into action. June 6, 1944, while the Allied Invasion Forces stormed the beaches at Normandy, the 301st was packing for their overseas journey. Five days at sea, zig-zagging to avoid submarines landing in Grenoch Scotland. Next stop Trowbridge England awaiting the channel Crossing to Utah Beach, Normandy, France. Next stops as Lorrent France to relieve elements of the 6th Armored Division where Christmas No. 3 would be celebrated. Jan. 5, 1945 would begin a brutal five day push north to Gongelfangen, Germany. January 17 moved to Leinsdorf, Germany and the Siegfried Switch. March 7, 1945 was relieved and headed back to Dodenhaven, France for R and R. It was short-lived, two days later marching orders were given and headed back to east of Sar River near Zerf. Again relieved and began a road March through Germany, France, Luxenberg, Belgium and Holland. May 12, 1945 learned of VE Day (one week late). The War in Europe was over but not in the world.
Surviving are: nieces, Yolanda Napolitano and husband Francisco, Mass.; Linda Griguts, Browndale; Mary Ann Bean, Clifford Twp.; Carol Pantzar, Vandling; Eileen Debevec, Uniondale; Gina Johnson, NJ; Joanne Trusky, NY; nephews, Ronald Skubic, Pleasant Mt.; John Skubic, Wash.; Jim Skubic, Allentown; Andy Suponcic, Fla.; many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph, Frank, Ignetz, John, Ludwig, and Louis; and sisters, Mary, Ann, Josephine, and Helen.
The funeral will be Saturday from Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 2 Hospital St., Carbondale with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Twp.
