Thordis Jane “Snooky” Moffitt

October 28, 2024

Thordis Jane “Snooky” Moffitt, 86, of Mayfield, PA, passed away peacefully in the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore on October 28, 2024. Born on May 18, 1938, in Mount Prospect, Illinois, Jane was the beloved wife of the late Roland W. Moffitt, with whom she shared 23 years of marriage before his passing in 1978.

Jane leaves behind her cherished companion of 36 years, Robert Downing, and a loving family: daughters Elizabeth Jane Bayley, Ruth Ann Foster (Dale), Rhonda Lynn Sod (Bill), Jeanne Kay Nakonechni (Pete), Mary Kathreen Ruddy (John), and son Roland W. Moffitt, Jr. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Jeanne McClaskey (Huntley, IL), and brother Hugh Johnson (Elani) (Rochester, NY), sister-in-law Catherine Moffitt, along with her adored nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kayla Nakonechni; parents, Jane K. Denton  (Danny) and Norman Johnson; brother Sherry Norman Johnson; brother-in-law Ronald McClaskey; and her son-in-law Charles Bayley.

Jane was known for her resilience and vivacity. After the loss of Roland, she dedicated herself to her career at Trichilo Food Service for over 35 years, forming lasting friendships with her customers along the way. Jane had a passion for bowling, participating in multiple leagues at Valley Bowling Lanes, and enjoyed crafting beautiful ceramics, decorating her home with love. Her determination shone through when she took on knitting, successfully completing an afghan despite being told she could not.

An active member of her community, Jane was a past president of the Carbondale Area PTA and a member of the Forest City Lions Club. She treasured the memories she created with Bob during their travels, especially their beloved vacations in Punta Cana. Jane found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly evenings spent on her back deck with Bob, sharing meals and laughter. Her legacy of love, determination, and community spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Jane’s viewing, which will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale.  A celebration of Jane’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home.  Cremation will follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Penn State Thon ( https://donate.thon.org/ ) or Hospice of the Sacred Heart ( www.hospicesacredheart.org/donate ).
