Ruth Altemeier Caporali, 83, of Carbondale, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Joseph J. Caporali, who passed away in March 2019.
Born in New Milford, she was the daughter of the late John and Esther (Lancaster) Altemeier. Ruth was a graduate of Blue Ridge High School and later earned her Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) certification. She dedicated herself not only to her profession, but also to her community. Ruth was a founding and original board member of the Carbondale Area Junior Sports Association, serving as a sponsor of the Carbondale Blitz and later the Carbondale Jr. Chargers Youth Football and Cheerleading organization. Her commitment helped shape youth athletics in the community for generations.
Ruth is survived by her loving family, including her three children: Loiuselle Kelleher and her husband, Shawn, of California; Erika Tolerico and her partner, Jeff Arthur, of Carbondale; and Joseph Caporali and his wife, Christine, of Cooperstown. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Stephen Ruddy, Theodore Sabatini, Thomas Tolerico and husband Arthur Mierson, Drake Tolerico and fiancée Vanessa Fernandez, Cala Tolerico, Giana Caporali, and Ava Caporali; her great-grandchildren: Olivia Lukens, Wyatt Lukens, Gabriel Tolerico, and Emmett Tolerico; as well as several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a special friend, Patricia Gilia.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, John Joseph Caporali.
The funeral will be held Thursday, March 26, 2026, from the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 2 Hospital Street, Carbondale, with a Blessing Service at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment, Sandy Banks Cemetery, Greenfield Township.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Ruth’s viewing, which will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
