John Mihal

John N. Mihal, 75, of Lake Winola, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 49 years, the former Marlene Pierce.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, John was the son of the late Gilbert and Theresa (Kuharcik) Harvey. John graduated from Lake Lehman High School, before serving in the United States Navy.

John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. He never missed an opportunity to support his children in all of their activities, whether it was trail racing, cheerleading, basketball, or other sporting events. His unwavering encouragement and presence meant the world to those he loved.

An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He was also a passionate sports fan who faithfully cheered for the Baltimore Orioles and the Philadelphia Eagles. More recently, he became an enthusiastic supporter of Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, and the Indiana Fever. Considered a jack of all trades, John was a self-taught handyman who would quickly offer help with a project to anyone in need.

While raising his family, John was a dedicated supporter of Carbondale Area athletics. Alongside his wife, Marlene, he organized numerous fan buses to cheer on the Chargers, especially during the memorable "Road to Hershey" runs of the early 1990s. His enthusiasm and school spirit helped create lasting memories for countless student-athletes and fellow fans.

In addition to his beloved wife, Marlene, John is survived by his three children: Kara Johnston and her husband, John, of New Hampshire; Nathan Mihal and his wife, Stephanie, of Newton Ransom; and Bettylou Mihal and her wife, Tonya, of Etters. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Kiernan, John, Keelyn, and Lily Johnston, and Noah and Nathan Mihal Jr.; two sisters, Patricia Harrison of Shavertown and Tina Chesniak of Old Forge; two brothers, Michael Harvey of Fleetville and Timothy Harvey of Old Forge; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by four brothers, George Mihal, Fred Mihal, Richard Harvey, and Kenneth Harvey.

Family and friends are invited to John's visitation on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale. A blessing service will be held at 6:45 p.m.
